Obverse description Central field displays a stylized frontal bust of the patriarch within a beaded inner circle, rendered in the bold, schematic style characteristic of late 12th-century Italian hammered coinage. The figure is depicted wearing ecclesiastical vestments and holding a patriarchal staff or crozier, with the design exhibiting the typical shallow relief of scyphate denari. A beaded border frames the inner circle, with the surrounding legend reading AQLEGIA · P · distributed around the periphery. The overall fabric is concave (scyphate), with irregular flan edges typical of hand-struck medieval issues.

Additional information

Pellegrino II ruled the Patriarchate of Aquileia from 1195 to 1204, wielding both ecclesiastical and temporal authority over a territory that sat uncomfortably between the competing pressures of the Holy Roman Empire and the rising communes of northeastern Italy. His denari are among the earliest securely attributed issues of the Aquileian mint, and Bernardi's cataloguing of this type as number 8 places it near the foundation of the patriarchal coinage sequence.

The PI LI abbreviation in the coin's designation reflects the Latin form of his name as it appears on the die.
