The cross is rendered in a bold, flat relief characteristic of Lombard communal coinage. The circumferential legend is distributed between the arms of the cross within the inner circle. The overall design is typical of the Romanesque decorative vocabulary employed by northern Italian communes in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. |

The text references Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa), under whose imperial authority the Commune of Brescia struck this denaro. The surrounding area between the inner and outer reeded borders is decorated with a series of radiating triangular points or spurs, forming a distinctive star-like ornamental border common to northern Italian communal issues of this period. The flan is irregular and slightly concave, consistent with hammered medieval fabric. |
