Berthold of Merania was appointed Patriarch of Aquileia in 1218 by Pope Honorius III, partly as a political counterweight to Hohenstaufen influence in northeastern Italy — a balancing act that defined much of his thirty-three year tenure. The Patriarchate wielded genuine secular authority across Friuli during this period, and its coinage functioned as an assertion of that jurisdiction as much as a monetary instrument.
Bernardi 14 is among the better-documented types from Berthold's long reign, though attributing specific emission dates within his tenure remains difficult.
