Additional information

Ptolemy of Mauretania was the last client king of his dynasty — grandson of Antony and Cleopatra through their daughter Cleopatra Selene — and these denarii were struck during the final years of his reign before Caligula summoned him to Rome and had him executed in 40 AD, reportedly over a dispute about a purple cloak. The kingdom was then absorbed directly into the Roman provincial system, making Ptolemy's coinage the terminal issue of a client monarchy that had survived three generations of Roman patronage.
