To either side of the standards, rows of circular shields are depicted, evoking the decorated fascia of a legionary column on the march. The legend LEG V is inscribed in the lower field beneath the standards, identifying this issue as struck for the Fifth Legion. The overall composition is bold and schematic, consistent with the urgency of a mobile military mint producing coinage to pay troops on campaign. |
