Juba II ruled Mauretania as a client king under Augustus and later Tiberius — educated in Rome, fluent in Greek, and the author of now-lost encyclopedic works on natural history and geography. His coinage from Caesarea was produced under Roman oversight but with a distinctly Hellenistic character, reflecting a king who had spent his formative years in the imperial household after being paraded in Julius Caesar's triumph as a child. The absence of the club behind his head distinguishes this piece from the more common club-bearing issues, qualifying it as a variety against the principal references.
