Denarius - Juba II Caesarea

Juba II ruled Mauretania as a client king under Augustus — installed not because of military conquest but because Rome needed a educated, loyal administrator on the North African frontier. He had been raised in Rome after his father's defeat at Thapsus in 46 BC, and his reign lasted nearly five decades, making this an unusually long series with considerable die variation across issues. Caesarea, the mint city, was Juba's renamed capital — formerly Iol, refounded in a deliberate act of Romanization.
