| 裏面の説明 | A war elephant depicted in left profile, standing on a ground line, rendered in a bold and stylized manner characteristic of Mauretanian royal coinage. The animal is shown with prominent rounded body, ringed legs, decorated ear-flap, and upraised trunk, reflecting the military and dynastic symbolism associated with the Mauretanian royal house. The reverse field is plain with no legend, and the design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

Juba II ruled Mauretania as a client king under Augustus — installed not because of military conquest but because Rome needed a educated, loyal administrator on the North African frontier. He had been raised in Rome after his father's defeat at Thapsus in 46 BC, and his reign lasted nearly five decades, making this an unusually long series with considerable die variation across issues. The MAA and SNG Copenhagen references cover distinct emission groups within that span.
Caesarea, the mint city, was Juba's renamed capital — formerly Iol, refounded in a deliberate act of Romanization.
