Juba II was not a native ruler in any traditional sense — taken to Rome as an infant after his father's defeat at Thapsus in 46 BC, he was raised in Julius Caesar's household and later educated among the Roman elite. Augustus installed him as client king of Mauretania around 25 BC precisely because of that Roman formation, and the coinage he issued reflects a man who understood numismatic convention as a political instrument. His mint at Caesarea produced a sustained and varied series across nearly five decades of reign.
