Juba II was installed as client king of Mauretania by Augustus around 25 BC — not as a reward, but as a calculated placement of a Romanized African intellectual into a strategically vital buffer kingdom. He had been raised in Rome after his father's defeat at Thapsus, educated alongside Octavian's circle, and authored now-lost works on natural history, geography, and theater. His queen, Cleopatra Selene, was the daughter of Antony and Cleopatra VII, raised in Rome after being paraded in Octavian's triumph of 29 BC. Their coinage thus joined the last Ptolemaic bloodline with Augustus's own political machinery.
The Caesarea mint issues vary considerably in die quality across the reign's nearly five decades of output.
