She extends her right hand forward holding a patera, symbolic of libation and piety, while her left hand rests on a long vertical sceptre. The figure is rendered in the classical style typical of Hadrianic reverse types, with drapery folds carefully articulated. The encircling Latin legend CLEMENTIA AVG COS III P P runs around the periphery within a beaded border. |

Hadrian's CLEMENTIA coinage of 129–130 belongs to a broader programmatic series issued after his return to Rome following his second great tour of the eastern provinces. The personification was not idle flattery — Hadrian had recently demonstrated conspicuous clemency toward several senators implicated in the conspiracy allegations surrounding his accession in 117, a politically loaded act that his supporters were keen to memorialize in metal.
