This denarius belongs to a remarkable administrative experiment: the revival of the tresviri monetales, the traditional board of three mint magistrates, under Augustus. By restoring this Republican office — while ensuring the appointees were loyal men from his own circle — Augustus staged a calculated act of constitutional theater. L. Vinicius, son of a consul, was one such appointee, his name prominently displayed in a manner that would have looked perfectly traditional to a Roman audience while the political reality was anything but.
The obverse legend referencing senatorial authorization (EX S C) was itself a pointed formality by this date; the Senate's role in coinage was already ceremonial.
