RIC I 281 belongs to a group of Augustan denarii attributed to a travelling mint — most likely accompanying Augustus during his extended stays in Spain and Gaul between roughly 19 and 4 BC. The goddess Feronia, an ancient Italic deity associated with freedmen and the rural lower classes, appears on relatively few imperial issues, making her presence here notable. Her cult at Terracina had been revived with some official interest under Augustus as part of his broader program of restoring neglected Roman religious traditions.
