The Marsic Confederation issued this denarius at the outbreak of the Social War, the rebellion by Rome's Italian allies demanding the citizenship Rome had long withheld. The confederation even minted in deliberate imitation of Roman coinage weight and module — a pointed political act, asserting financial legitimacy for a state that existed for barely two years before Roman military and diplomatic pressure crushed it. The city of Corfinium was briefly renamed Italica and designated the confederation's capital.
The war ultimately produced the very citizenship the allies had fought for, granted piecemeal through the lex Julia and lex Plautia Papiria before fighting ended.
