Beschrijving keerzijde Central device depicting a spearhead or lance point accompanied by a small cross positioned to the right, rendered in low relief on an unadorned field. The motif is a common heraldic charge found on Lithuanian denars of the Vytautas period, struck on an irregularly shaped flan with no surrounding legend. The design is characteristic of the simplified, utilitarian style of hammered silver coinage produced in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the early 15th century.

Aanvullende informatie

Vytautas ruled the Grand Duchy at its maximum territorial extent, following the Battle of Grunwald in 1410 where Lithuanian and Polish forces crushed the Teutonic Knights. These denars were struck during the years he pressed hardest for a royal crown — a campaign ultimately frustrated in 1430 when Polish nobles blocked the coronation envoys before they could reach Medininkai. He died weeks later, still a grand duke rather than a king.
