| Reverse description | A majestic head of the nymph Arethusa faces right, her hair bound with an olive wreath and adorned with earring and necklace, rendered with the refined sculptural style of the early Classical period. Her portrait is enclosed within a raised circular border, around which four dolphins swim in a clockwise arrangement, referencing the mythological spring of Arethusa on the island of Ortygia. The inscription ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ, reading around the periphery between the dolphins, identifies the issuing city. The overall composition reflects the high artistic achievement of Syracusan die engravers in the mid-fifth century BC. |
