Her portrait is enclosed within a raised circular border, around which four dolphins swim in a clockwise arrangement, referencing the mythological spring of Arethusa on the island of Ortygia. The inscription ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ, reading around the periphery between the dolphins, identifies the issuing city. The overall composition reflects the high artistic achievement of Syracusan die engravers in the mid-fifth century BC. |
