The Barony of Batenburg occupied an awkward jurisdictional position throughout the sixteenth century — nominally a fief under the Duchy of Guelders, yet its lords struck silver with a persistence that irritated both Habsburg administrators and neighboring mints. William V van Bronckhorst-Batenburg issued these daelders during a period when the Habsburg Netherlands were tightening monetary ordinances, and small lordships like Batenburg were repeatedly ordered to cease independent coinage. They rarely complied for long.
The DENA NOVVS inscription distinguishes this emission from earlier Batenburg daelders and likely marks a deliberate reauthorization or redesign within William's reign rather than a clean break in production.
