Gertrude of Brederode governed Vianen as regent following the death of her husband Reinoud III van Brederode in 1573, issuing coinage in her own name during one of the most turbulent stretches of the Dutch Revolt. The right to strike coin was fiercely guarded by the minor lordships of the Low Countries precisely because it signaled independent jurisdiction — something the Spanish crown was actively working to extinguish.
The Delmonte "var" designation here matters: die varieties on Vianen lion daelders of this period are well documented but inconsistently catalogued, and misattributions between Gertrude's issues and those of her predecessor are not uncommon in the trade.
