Daalder Friesland between the Ems and Lauwers

The province of Groningen and the Ommelanden had a fractious relationship throughout the late sixteenth century — the city of Groningen itself remained under Spanish control until 1594, while the surrounding Ommelanden had already committed to the Union of Utrecht in 1579. This coin was struck during that uncomfortable interval, when the Ommelanden functioned as a semi-autonomous entity issuing its own coinage under the nominal authority of a province whose capital was held by the enemy. The "between the Ems and Lauwers" designation was not decorative geography but a political claim, asserting jurisdictional identity distinct from the city.
