Beschrijving voorzijde Central field displays a crowned royal shield of Castile and Leon, quartered with castles and lions, surmounted by a large crown with fleur-de-lis finials. The shield is flanked by decorative foliate or heraldic supporters on either side. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A partial Latin legend reading ALFONSVS DEI GRACIA REX runs around the outer margin, partially visible due to the irregular flan typical of hammered coinage of this period.

Aanvullende informatie

Alfonso de Ávila was proclaimed king of Castile in June 1465 at the so-called Farce of Ávila, where a effigy of the reigning Henry IV was symbolically stripped of its regalia and toppled — one of the more theatrical acts of medieval Iberian political theater. The teenage Alfonso never secured the throne; he died in 1468, likely of plague, ending the rebellion's dynastic gambit before it could consolidate. Coins struck in his name during these three years circulated in territories controlled by the rebel nobility, giving this issue a geographically and chronologically compressed production window that directly shapes surviving populations.
