Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a large, boldly struck Cross of the Order of Christ (Cruz de Cristo) at the centre of the field, its four arms tapering elegantly toward the edges and each quadrant containing a six-petalled rosette or floral ornament. The cross is rendered with crisp, high-relief lines characteristic of milled Portuguese coinage of this period. Surrounding the central cross, the circular Latin legend *IN HOC SIGNO VINCES* — meaning 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — is separated from the device by a beaded inner border, with asterisk separators between words. A continuous reeded rim frames the entire design.
