João III's cruzado coinage underwent repeated revision during the 1530s as the Crown wrestled with maintaining gold fineness against the pressures of colonial trade — vast quantities of West African gold entering Lisbon created both opportunity and standardization problems. This third-type issue represents one of those corrective moments, tightening the specification after earlier types showed compositional drift detectable in assay records of the period.
The Lisboa mint's output for this narrow 1537–1538 window was compressed by the concurrent demands of the Estado da India, which consumed significant royal gold reserves for emergency coinage in Goa.
