India's genuine 1979 commemorative was struck in copper-nickel to mark the UN International Year of the Child. This piece is a contemporary counterfeit — produced in a debased base metal alloy rather than the correct copper-nickel — almost certainly intended for circulation rather than collector deception, as the genuine issue saw wide release and was encountered regularly in everyday commerce.
The weight deviation from the authentic KM#268 spec is the primary diagnostic tell.
