Obverse description Central device features the Lion Capital of Ashoka (the national emblem of India), depicted in three-quarter relief atop its abacus. The denomination numeral '50' appears prominently in the lower field, with the Devanagari legend 'रुपये' immediately above it. The peripheral legend reads 'भारत' to the left and 'INDIA' to the right in the upper arc, with the national motto 'सत्यमेव जयते' inscribed below the Lion Capital. The overall striking is characteristically soft and poorly defined, consistent with a contemporary cast or crudely struck counterfeit.

Reverse description Central device depicts the UNICEF International Year of the Child emblem — a stylised figure of a child rendered within a square cartouche, itself set within a circular border. A decorative wreath of laurel branches flanks and surrounds the central composition in the lower half of the field. The peripheral legend carries the bilingual inscription 'बच्चे की मुस्कान-राष्ट्र की शान' (upper arc, Devanagari) and 'HAPPY CHILD-NATION'S PRIDE' (lower arc, Latin), with the date '1979' at the base. The die work is notably weak and the surface shows porosity consistent with a counterfeit striking.

Additional information

India's genuine 1979 commemorative was struck in copper-nickel to mark the UN International Year of the Child. This piece is a contemporary counterfeit — produced in a debased base metal alloy rather than the correct copper-nickel — almost certainly intended for circulation rather than collector deception, as the genuine issue saw wide release and was encountered regularly in everyday commerce.

The weight deviation from the authentic KM#268 spec is the primary diagnostic tell.
