Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Gothic initial 'M' for Manuel I, the letter surmounted by a royal crown rendered in the late Gothic style typical of early sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered coinage. The crowned monogram is set within a raised inner circle. The surrounding marginal legend in Latin runs along the coin's periphery, separated from the central device by a beaded or plain inner border. The flan is irregular and slightly concave, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period.
