Chalkon

Kleitor was a minor polis in the Arcadian highlands, inland from the major coastal powers and largely absent from the broader political conflicts that defined the early Hellenistic period. Its autonomous bronze coinage — of which this chalkon is a specimen — represents one of the few material traces of the city's independent civic identity before Arcadian regional politics steadily eroded the autonomy of smaller inland communities. The BCD Peloponnesos collection, which dispersed at auction in 2012, remains the key reference point for die-linking within this series.
