| Beschrijving keerzijde | The Portuguese royal shield, displaying the quinas (five escutcheons charged with bezants) in the traditional arrangement, is superimposed at the center of a cross of the Order of Avis, whose four fleurs-de-lis terminals extend toward the coin's periphery. The shield rests directly upon the cross, a diagnostic feature of this group as noted in Magro. A partial circular legend in uncial Latin characters is present in the surrounding field. The overall design is boldly struck but characteristic of the irregular fabric common to hammered medieval Portuguese coinage. |
