| Popis líce | Central field depicts an eagle displayed above a quartered shield bearing the Trivulzio arms, rendered in the late Gothic style characteristic of late 15th-century Lombard coinage. The shield is surmounted by a crested helm with elaborate mantling extending into the field on either side. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading the titles and name of the issuing lord. The die work is bold and characteristic of hand-struck hammered coinage of the period, with some weakness of strike at the periphery. |

The Trivulzio family acquired Mesocco through Johann Jakob's purchase of the Val Mesolcina from the Sax-Misox counts in 1483, making this issue a product of a lordship that existed almost entirely within his own lifetime's ambitions. Johann Jakob was one of the most capable condottieri of the Italian Wars — French Marshal after Marignano in 1515 — and his northern Alpine territories served as a financial and logistical base for campaigns conducted far to the south. The cavallotto denomination itself was a northern Italian monetary unit tied closely to Milan, reflecting the economic orbit Trivulzio operated within.
The lordship passed to the Graubünden leagues by 1526, rendering this coinage type short-lived by structural necessity.
