The Bituriges Cubi occupied the fertile lands of the Berry region in central Gaul, with Avaricum (modern Bourges) as their principal oppidum. Their bronze coinage was struck during the decade when Caesar's legions were systematically reducing Gallic resistance — Avaricum itself fell in 52 BC after a siege Caesar described in detail in the Gallic Wars, with the near-total massacre of its population. Local bronze issues from this window are thought to have served inter-community exchange as the tribe's silver coinage contracted under Roman military pressure.
