The Remi were among the more politically pragmatic tribes of Belgic Gaul — they had cooperated with Caesar during his campaigns and were rewarded with relative autonomy. This coin invokes the name of Aulus Hirtius, Caesar's legate and later consul of 43 BC, who completed the eighth book of the Gallic Wars after Caesar's death. Whether his name here reflects a formal administrative relationship or a local gesture of political alignment is debated, but the Remi's habit of naming coins after Roman officials is well documented in this series.
