Tasciovanos ruled the Catuvellauni from roughly the late first century BC, and this issue is tied specifically to his use of "VERLAMIO" — a mint signature referencing Verulamium, the oppidum near modern St Albans that served as his tribal capital. The appearance of named mint places on British Celtic coinage is itself significant; most insular issues carry no such geographic attribution. Tasciovanos was likely the father of Cunobelinus, the historical figure behind Shakespeare's Cymbeline, and his reign marked a period of aggressive Catuvellaunian expansion into Trinovantian territory.
