Bronze of Epenos

The Meldi were a small Belgic people settled along the Marne valley, roughly centered on modern Meaux. Their bronze coinage is poorly documented in ancient sources — they appear only briefly in Caesar's Gallic War, noted as a tribe whose territory he passed through rather than subdued outright. The dating of this type to the mid-first century BC places its production squarely within the decades of Roman military pressure that progressively dismantled the monetary autonomy of Belgic Gaul.

The attribution to Epenos remains a working hypothesis based on legend readings across die variants catalogued under DT 587.
