Tasciovanos ruled the Catuvellauni from roughly the late first century BC, operating out of Verulamium — modern St Albans — and is among the most prolific coin issuers of pre-Roman Britain. The addition of the title MEGA to his name on certain issues, a Latinized borrowing from the Greek for "great," signals deliberate engagement with Roman political vocabulary at exactly the moment Augustus was consolidating power across Gaul.
Whether MEGA was self-proclaimed or reflected genuine regional dominance is unresolved, but Tasciovanos briefly extended his reach into Trinovantian territory — coins bearing his name have been found at Camulodunum, the Trinovantian capital — before that expansion was apparently reversed.
