The Arverni occupied the volcanic highlands of what is now Auvergne, and their coinage reflects a tribe that had not fully recovered its political footing after Vercingetorix's father, Celtillus, was executed by his own people for allegedly seeking kingship. The CALIIDV series — the legend likely abbreviating a personal name, possibly a magistrate or issuing authority — belongs to the final decades before Caesar's Gallic campaigns extinguished independent Arvernian minting entirely. After the defeat at Alesia in 52 BC, no further autonomous coinage was struck.
