| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the Portuguese royal arms, depicted as a crowned shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons in cross arrangement) of Portugal, rendered in low relief characteristic of hammered tin-lead coinage. The shield is surrounded by a beaded inner border. A circular Latin legend encircles the design in the outer field, reading ODMPR.DE.PV.SOR.DIA.MALA, representing an abbreviated titulature of King Manuel I as lord of the conquest, navigation, and commerce of India, Persia, Arabia, and Malacca. The overall execution is crude and irregular, consistent with colonial mint production in the calin alloy typical of Southeast Asian Portuguese issues. |
