The effigy displays the characteristic Syrian artistic style, with the drapery indicated at the shoulder. The circular legend runs along the beaded border of the flan, reading L IVL AVR SVLP ANTONINVS, giving the usurper's full nomenclature. The flan is slightly irregular in shape, consistent with emergency or provincial hammered production. A large eagle with spread wings is shown prominently above or behind the mounted figure, a motif strongly associated with the solar cult of Emesa and divine protection. The scene is rendered in high relief with vigorous, if somewhat provincial, engraving. The circular legend CONSERVATOR AVG, meaning 'Protector of the Emperor', runs around the beaded border, asserting the usurper's divine mandate. No exergual inscription is present. |
