The bird stands upon a laurel branch, its plumage rendered in fine hammered relief against a plain field. The motif alludes to the consecratio of Trajan and the perpetuity of Roman imperial power under Hadrian, who issued this type to honour his deified predecessor. No legend is present on the reverse, the image alone carrying its symbolic weight. |
