The portrait conveys the posthumous idealisation of Trajan as divus, with the laurel wreath denoting divine and imperial honours. The surrounding legend is disposed in a continuous arc around the periphery of the flan. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | The mythological phoenix, rendered as a long-legged bird standing in right profile, depicted with a radiate solar nimbus encircling its head, evoking themes of eternity, apotheosis, and imperial renewal. The bird stands upon a laurel branch, its plumage rendered in fine hammered relief against a plain field. The motif alludes to the consecratio of Trajan and the perpetuity of Roman imperial power under Hadrian, who issued this type to honour his deified predecessor.
