The animal stands upon a ground line beneath which the legend IMP VIII is inscribed in the exergue, referencing Titus's eighth imperial acclamation. The left portion of the field is bordered by a partial beaded circle, while the remainder of the field is plain and slightly striated from the hammering process. The composition is bold and emblematic, evoking Roman martial and sacrificial symbolism. The overall design is consistent with Flavian aureus types struck at the Rome Mint under Vespasian. |

This aureus belongs to a politically loaded moment: Titus held the imperatorial acclamation for the eighth time in 75 AD, a figure inflated well beyond battlefield reality to project martial authority during his father Vespasian's reign. Titus was being groomed with aggressive transparency — joint tribunician power, co-consul repeatedly, and these stacked imperatorial numbers served the Flavian succession narrative as much as any military result.
RIC II.1 786 is a Vespasian-era Rome mint issue, placing its production squarely before Titus's own reign began in 79 AD.
