Nero's fourth consulship, held from 60 AD, coincided with the early period of his reign still shaped by Seneca and Burrus — the phase later historians would call his quinquennium, the five good years. The EX S C legend on an aureus is an unusual acknowledgment of senatorial authority on a gold issue, and its precise constitutional meaning remains debated; some scholars read it as a deliberate political gesture toward the Senate following the turbulence of Claudius's final years.
RIC I#27 is a relatively scarce type within the Neronian gold series.
