Hadrian's draped and cuirassed effigy faces right, his curly beard and distinctive laureate wreath rendered in fine detail, while Trajan's mature profile appears over his left shoulder. The encircling Latin legend reads IMP CAES TRAIAN HADRIANO OPT AVG G D PART, distributed around the entire circumference of the flan. This rare double-portrait composition was employed to legitimize Hadrian's succession by visually associating him with his deified predecessor. |
