The VIRTVS MILITVM reverse type was issued in the immediate aftermath of Galerius's brutal campaign against the Sassanid Empire, culminating in the decisive Roman victory at the Battle of Satala in 298 AD — a reversal of his catastrophic earlier defeat at Callinicum, where he reportedly fled the field and was forced to walk on foot before Diocletian's chariot as punishment. The Beaurains hoard provenance cited in the reference is significant: that treasure, buried in northern Gaul around 312 AD, contained one of the finest documented concentrations of Tetrarchic gold and is the primary source for many known examples of this specific type.
