Domitian's early aurei from 81 AD date to the months immediately following the death of Titus, when Domitian moved aggressively to establish his own image and titulature. The tribunician and consular dating formula places this issue precisely in that first year of his reign, before the titles fully stabilized into the forms familiar from his later coinage.
Domitian's relationship with Minerva was unusually personal — he credited her with warning him in a dream of a conspiracy against his life, and maintained a private shrine to her. That devotion shaped his entire minting program for fifteen years.
