The figure conveys martial strength and imperial virtue in the classical tradition. The reverse legend VIRTVS AVG is distributed to either side of the central type in large Latin capitals, with a beaded border encircling the design. The composition is well-centred on the flan, with the exergue left plain. The style and iconography are consistent with Diocletianic aurei struck at a western Roman mint in the late third century. |
