| Beschrijving keerzijde | The personification of Virtus stands facing left in the field, depicted as a helmeted military figure in armour, resting with the right hand upon a spear held vertically and the left hand leaning on a large round shield set at the feet. The figure conveys martial strength and imperial virtue in the classical tradition. The reverse legend VIRTVS AVG is distributed to either side of the central type in large Latin capitals, with a beaded border encircling the design. The composition is well-centred on the flan, with the exergue left plain. The style and iconography are consistent with Diocletianic aurei struck at a western Roman mint in the late third century. |
