| Reverse description | Draped bust of Agrippina the Elder facing right, her hair waved back from the brow in the characteristic Julio-Claudian fashion and gathered into a long plaited queue at the nape, with a single loose lock descending onto the neck. The portrait is rendered with refined sculptural detail, presenting Agrippina with dignified, idealised features befitting her exalted dynastic status as mother of the reigning emperor. The bust is truncated at the shoulder, set within a beaded border. The encircling Latin legend, reading clockwise, identifies her as the mother of Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, serving as a posthumous honorific tribute issued by her son Caligula. |
