Honos, the Roman personification of honor and military virtue, received particular emphasis under Hadrian as part of a deliberate ideological repositioning after the conquests of Trajan. Hadrian abandoned Trajan's Mesopotamian gains almost immediately upon accession, and the Honos type — appearing in his early coinage — functioned as a reframing: civic and martial virtue redefined around consolidation rather than expansion. The PONT MAX TR POT COS III dating places this piece in 119–120, the third consulship year, when Hadrian was still working to secure senatorial acceptance after the execution of four senior ex-consuls at his accession.
