Carthage was refounded as a Roman colony by Julius Caesar and Augustus, planted deliberately on the ruins of the city Scipio had razed in 146 BC. The duoviri listed in this coin's legend — the colony's senior magistrates — exercised the right to strike local bronze under Augustan authorization, a privilege tied directly to the colony's status as Colonia Iulia Concordia Carthago.
