Carthage was refounded as a Roman colony by Julius Caesar and Augustus, planted deliberately on the ruins of the city Scipio had razed in 146 BC. The duoviri listed in this coin's legend — the colony's senior magistrates — exercised the right to strike local bronze under Augustan authorization, a privilege tied directly to the colony's status as Colonia Iulia Concordia Carthago. Local colonial bronzes of this period were produced in short, politically timed runs, often coinciding with magistrates' terms of office, which is why die matches within the series are relatively rare.
